FACT FRIDAY WEEK 11

Christmas is coming! The bird we most associate with the festive time of the year is, of course, the robin. But why are robins such an integral part of the Christmas spirit?

They are one of the only birds that keep singing through the winter. Usually breeding season is when birds sing the most, to find a mate. However robins are fiercely territorial, so they keep defending their patch by filling the winter air with melodies.

Their favourite time of the day to sing is dawn and dusk. While it’s almost completely male robins who sing in the spring, during winter it could be a male or a female that you can hear!

Keep an eye and an ear out for these lovable little birds as we get ready for the Christmas celebrations!
